Cobra Electronics has expanded its radar detector portfolio with the launch of the RAD 390, an entry-level model aimed at making radar and laser detection technology more accessible for everyday motorists while strengthening its presence in mass-market retail through Walmart.
The new device joins Cobra’s growing RAD Series family, which also includes the recently introduced RAD 490i and flagship RAD 700i. Positioned as the company’s most affordable offering in the lineup, the RAD 390 is designed for drivers seeking essential radar detection capabilities without premium features such as app connectivity.
According to Cobra, the RAD 390 is engineered to provide earlier warnings of nearby speed-monitoring systems, including police radar and laser signals, helping drivers improve road awareness during daily commutes, long-distance travel and unfamiliar routes.
The company said the detector offers enhanced detection range compared with previous-generation models, allowing motorists additional time to respond to speed enforcement zones while maintaining a simplified user experience.
“Drivers shouldn’t be forced to choose between advanced detection capabilities and user-friendly operation,” said Jonas Forsberg, Chief Executive Officer of Cedar Electronics, Cobra’s parent company. “The RAD 390 is engineered to prioritize the capabilities drivers look for: better detection range and reduced false alerts, resulting in quieter, more accurate performance.”
One of the key enhancements in the new model is an updated signal-filtering system designed to reduce false alerts generated by modern vehicle safety technologies, including collision avoidance and driver assistance systems. Such systems have increasingly become a source of unwanted notifications for conventional radar detectors as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) have become more common in passenger vehicles.
The RAD 390 also features a seven-segment LED display that provides at-a-glance information while minimising driver distraction. Cobra has redesigned the device’s adhesive windshield mount with a lower-profile form factor intended to improve stability during everyday driving.
The detector additionally supports firmware updates, enabling users to install software enhancements intended to maintain compatibility with evolving radar technologies and improve long-term performance.
Cobra said the RAD 390 focuses on delivering core radar and laser detection functionality rather than the connected features available in higher-tier products. The RAD 490i, for example, adds Bluetooth connectivity, smartphone-based alerts and an OLED display, while the RAD 700i serves as the premium model in the series.
By expanding the lineup with a lower-priced option, Cobra is targeting consumers looking for straightforward radar detection without additional software features or subscription-based services.
The company has priced the RAD 390 at $119.95, positioning it as an accessible entry point into its radar detector portfolio.
