Teradyne (NASDAQ: TER) has introduced the UltraFLEXplus S series, an automated semiconductor test platform designed to improve manufacturing efficiency and reduce facility costs as demand grows for edge artificial intelligence devices.
The new series extends Teradyne’s UltraFLEXplus platform with a compact, single-module configuration aimed at high-mix, variable-volume semiconductor manufacturing. Its first model, the UltraFLEXplus S24, features 24 slots and supports both engineering development and production testing.
The system targets integrated device manufacturers (IDMs) and outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) providers, which must balance equipment utilization, production costs and changing product requirements across different semiconductor applications.
As AI processing expands beyond data centers into devices operating at the network edge, chip manufacturers face different production economics. Automotive, industrial and consumer applications can involve varied device types and production volumes, increasing the importance of flexible testing capacity and efficient use of factory space.
Compact Design Targets Manufacturing Costs
Teradyne said the UltraFLEXplus S series is designed to maximize output per square meter while improving operational efficiency. The system uses the same instrument module ecosystem, IG-XL software environment and test program library as the company’s quad-module UltraFLEXplus Q series.
This compatibility allows manufacturers to reuse existing test programs and engineering resources rather than develop separate infrastructure for the new platform. It is also intended to simplify integration into existing production workflows.
The platform supports engineering and production test insertions, including tri-temperature testing, for microcontrollers (MCUs), multimedia devices and edge AI chips. Tri-temperature testing evaluates semiconductor performance across three temperature conditions, helping manufacturers assess device behavior under different operating environments.
The applications span automotive electronics, industrial systems and consumer products, where semiconductor reliability and performance are important considerations.
Roy Chorev, vice president and general manager of Teradyne’s Compute Test division, said factory floor space is a significant cost in high-mix manufacturing. He added that the S series is designed to fit existing facilities while allowing customers to expand capacity as their requirements change.
Extending the UltraFLEXplus Platform
The S series complements Teradyne’s UltraFLEXplus Q series, giving customers two configurations within the same platform architecture. The S24 provides an entry point for manufacturers seeking a smaller system while retaining access to the broader platform’s software and instrument infrastructure.
Teradyne is positioning the system around several operational measures, including equipment utilization, overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) and output relative to floor space. These factors can influence manufacturing costs, particularly when production volumes fluctuate or facilities must accommodate multiple device types.
The launch also reflects the growing need for semiconductor test equipment suited to AI-enabled devices outside conventional cloud and data center environments. Edge AI applications can require testing across diverse chips and end markets, making adaptability and reuse of existing engineering resources important for manufacturers.
Teradyne said the new platform supports its broader effort to help customers scale test operations while improving engineering efficiency and product quality.
The company did not disclose pricing, customer commitments or commercial availability timelines for the UltraFLEXplus S24. Its adoption will depend on manufacturers’ testing requirements, production economics and plans to expand edge AI semiconductor capacity.
