Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) has announced the establishment of its second overseas research and development (R&D) base in India, marking a strategic expansion of its global innovation footprint. The new facility, set to become operational in April 2026, will be located in Hyderabad, Telangana, and follows the company’s first overseas R&D center launched in the Netherlands in September 2025.
The India-based R&D hub will be developed in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH), one of the country’s leading science and engineering institutions. The facility will be situated within the Technology Research Park (TRP) on the IITH campus, a dedicated corporate collaboration zone designed to foster industry-academia partnerships. Through this initiative, DNP aims to combine its technological expertise with IITH’s research capabilities and talent pool to accelerate innovation and its real-world implementation.
The move reflects India’s rising importance in the global economic and technological landscape. With a growing population, rapid economic development, and ongoing supply chain diversification, India is increasingly being viewed as a critical hub for R&D and manufacturing. Hyderabad, in particular, has emerged as a key technology center, supported by a robust ecosystem spanning mobility, healthcare, data centers, and semiconductor industries.
The state of Telangana, where Hyderabad is located, is also home to initiatives such as Telangana Mobility Valley (TMV), India’s first dedicated mobility cluster focused on advancing next-generation transportation technologies. Additionally, the region has established itself as a major pharmaceutical manufacturing hub, with a strong base in precision organic chemical synthesis and a concentration of skilled talent and industry players.
DNP’s new R&D base will initially focus on two priority areas: mobility and medical healthcare. In the mobility segment, the company will work on the development and demonstration of wireless power supply systems for electric vehicles (EVs). Leveraging its expertise in battery pouch materials—where it holds a leading global market share—DNP will utilize its proprietary sheet-type coil technology to design and commercialize wireless charging solutions. These efforts, undertaken in collaboration with IITH, aim to support the adoption of EVs in India by enabling more efficient and user-friendly charging infrastructure.
In the healthcare domain, the focus will be on advancing synthesis routes for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Through joint research with IITH, DNP plans to enhance process development capabilities, drawing on the expertise of its group company, DNP Fine Chemicals Utsunomiya Co., Ltd.. The initiative will cover the entire development cycle, from synthesis design and prototyping to evaluation and eventual mass production. Over time, DNP intends to position India as a key global base for API development and commercialization, targeting both domestic and international markets.
The establishment of the Hyderabad R&D center underscores DNP’s broader strategy to globalize its research operations and strengthen its business portfolio. By leveraging regional strengths in mobility innovation and pharmaceutical manufacturing, the company aims to accelerate the transition from research outcomes to practical, scalable solutions.
Founded in 1876, DNP has evolved into a global technology leader, leveraging its core capabilities in microfabrication and precision coating to serve industries such as display technologies, electronic devices, and optical films. The company continues to explore new business opportunities by integrating traditional printing technologies with advanced engineering solutions, while maintaining a focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility.
