GF, Renesas Deepen Multi-Billion Dollar Semiconductor Partnership

GlobalFoundries and Renesas

GlobalFoundries (GF) and Renesas Electronics Corporation have announced a multi-billion-dollar expansion of their strategic manufacturing partnership, aimed at accelerating semiconductor production in the United States and strengthening global supply chain resilience.

The expanded collaboration provides Renesas with broader access to GF’s differentiated technology portfolio, including FDX™ (FD-SOI), Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS (BCD) and feature-rich CMOS platforms with embedded non-volatile memory. These technologies are critical for Renesas’ system-on-chips (SoCs), power management devices and microcontrollers (MCUs), widely used in automotive, industrial and IoT applications. Tape-outs under the new agreement are expected to begin in mid-2026.

The partnership will initially scale manufacturing in the U.S., aligning with national efforts to reinforce domestic semiconductor production for economic and national security priorities. Production will also extend across GF’s global manufacturing network, including facilities in Germany and Singapore, as well as through its partnership operations in China. In addition, the companies are evaluating the potential transfer of select GF process technologies to Renesas’ internal fabrication plants in Japan to further enhance capacity flexibility and supply continuity.

The announcement comes as semiconductor demand continues to rise across electrified mobility and automated industrial systems. Modern vehicles increasingly rely on advanced chips for radar-based driver assistance, battery management systems in electric vehicles and secure connectivity platforms. Similarly, industrial automation and IoT deployments require robust, high-reliability semiconductor components capable of operating in harsh environments.

GF’s distributed manufacturing footprint across the U.S., Europe and Asia is positioned to provide supply diversification and risk mitigation. With the expanded Renesas collaboration, GF now manufactures semiconductors for the top three automotive MCU suppliers globally, strengthening its position in the automotive supply chain.

Tim Breen, CEO of GlobalFoundries, said the partnership reinforces GF’s role as a trusted manufacturing partner for essential semiconductor technologies. He highlighted the rapid evolution of the automotive sector, where semiconductors are increasingly central to innovation in safety, electrification and connectivity. GF’s differentiated platforms, he noted, are engineered to deliver performance and efficiency under demanding conditions.

Hidetoshi Shibata, CEO of Renesas, emphasized the importance of access to a wider range of process technologies to meet growing customer requirements. He said the agreement ensures long-term, stable semiconductor supply while maintaining high standards of quality and reliability. He also pointed to accelerating demand driven by electrification, connectivity and AI-enabled computing across automotive and industrial markets.

The expanded agreement reflects broader global efforts to localize critical semiconductor manufacturing. It supports U.S. initiatives to onshore advanced chip technologies while giving Renesas secure, regionally diversified production options.
