Microchip Technology (Nasdaq: MCHP) has announced the release of the TimeProvider® XT Extension System, a new solution designed to modernize synchronization and timing systems in critical infrastructure communication networks. This fan-out shelf, used with redundant TimeProvider 4100 grandmasters, facilitates the migration from legacy BITS/SSU equipment to a modular and resilient architecture, essential for 5G network deployment.
The TimeProvider XT Extension System provides operators with a clear path to replace aging SONET/SDH frequency synchronization equipment while integrating advanced timing and phase capabilities. Configured with two distribution modules and two plug-in modules, each shelf offers 40 fully redundant and individually programmable outputs. Up to five XT shelves can be connected, scaling up to 200 T1/E1/CC communication outputs, all managed through the TimeProvider 4100 grandmaster.
Randy Brudzinski, Vice President of Microchip’s Frequency and Time Systems business unit, highlighted the benefits: “The XT solution is an attractive investment for network operators because it is more than just a replacement for legacy BITS/SSU equipment; it also adds PRTC functionality, delivering frequency, time, and phase for next-generation networks.”
The TimeProvider XT Extension System is compatible with existing DCD, SSU 2000, TSG-3800, and TimeHub® systems, minimizing deployment time and costs by avoiding rewiring. It supports live in-service CC phase cutovers, maintaining network synchronization during maintenance.
Microchip’s new offering is part of their extensive portfolio of timing solutions, ranging from small plug-in server cards to multi-rack national time scale systems. The TimeProvider XT Extension is now available for purchase and is supported by TimePictra® Management Software for easy management and monitoring.
