CVD Equipment Corporation has successfully grown high-quality single crystal silicon carbide (SiC) boules using its Physical Vapor Transport (PVT) systems, marking a significant development in wide bandgap semiconductor materials. The achievement was realized in collaboration with Stony Brook University and evaluated at its onsemi Research Center for Wide Bandgap Materials.

The SiC boule was characterized by researchers and confirmed to exhibit a 4H crystal structure, without the presence of polytypes and with low defect density—key indicators of material quality for high-performance semiconductor applications. Silicon carbide is increasingly used in power electronics, electric vehicles, and high-frequency devices due to its superior efficiency, thermal conductivity, and durability.

The milestone reflects a long-standing collaboration between the company and the university, combining industrial equipment expertise with academic research capabilities. The partnership is focused on advancing crystal growth technologies for silicon carbide and other wide bandgap materials.

According to researchers at Stony Brook University, the successful demonstration highlights the potential of integrating advanced PVT systems with ongoing research to accelerate innovation in semiconductor materials. The development is expected to contribute to the next phase of high-performance electronic systems, where material quality plays a critical role.

From an industry standpoint, the result strengthens CVD Equipment Corporation’s position as a supplier of specialized systems for semiconductor manufacturing. The company indicated that the achievement demonstrates the performance and reliability of its PVT equipment in enabling next-generation material development.
