Megaport Launches Built-In DDoS Protection for Networks

Megaport

Megaport Limited (ASX: MP1) has launched a built-in distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) protection capability, aimed at improving network resilience for enterprises operating in cloud and distributed environments.

The new offering, Megaport DDoS Protection, is integrated directly into the company’s network fabric. It allows customers to filter malicious traffic within the Megaport infrastructure, eliminating the need to reroute data through external security services. The approach is designed to maintain uptime and performance without adding latency or operational complexity.

The launch comes as enterprises increasingly shift toward multi-cloud and distributed architectures. Traditional DDoS mitigation methods have struggled to keep pace with this transition. Internet service provider (ISP)-based solutions often respond to attacks by dropping all traffic, which can disrupt services. External mitigation providers typically redirect traffic through third-party scrubbing centers, creating what industry experts describe as a “security detour” that introduces delays and complicates network design.

Megaport said its solution addresses these limitations by embedding protection directly into the network layer. By keeping traffic on its intended path, the system is designed to maintain consistent performance even during an attack. The company positions this as a shift from add-on security models to integrated infrastructure-level protection.

Michael Reid, Chief Executive Officer of Megaport, said network resilience has become a core requirement for digital infrastructure. He noted that embedding DDoS protection within the network removes traditional trade-offs between security, performance, and cost. According to Reid, the service can be deployed in under a minute through the company’s platform, enabling faster response to emerging threats.

The solution includes several features aimed at simplifying deployment and operations. Traffic filtering occurs at the host or IP level, allowing only malicious traffic to be blocked while legitimate data continues to flow. This targeted approach is intended to reduce disruption during attack scenarios.

Megaport DDoS Protection is also designed with a self-service model. Customers can activate the feature through the Megaport Portal, without requiring complex configuration. Pre-defined protection profiles are included to help distinguish between normal traffic spikes and attack patterns, reducing the need for manual tuning.

In terms of pricing, the company has adopted a capacity-based model. Costs are tied to connection size rather than the scale or frequency of attacks, addressing a common concern among enterprises about unpredictable security expenses.

The service supports both passive and active mitigation modes and focuses on Layer 3 and Layer 4 attack vectors. These layers are commonly targeted in volumetric and protocol-based DDoS attacks, which can overwhelm network infrastructure.

Megaport said the launch reflects its broader strategy to integrate performance and security into a unified connectivity platform. As digital services become more critical to business operations, the company aims to position its network as both a connectivity and protection layer.
