OptiTrack Unveils ActiveIO for Next-Generation Motion Tracking

OptiTrack has introduced ActiveIO, a new active tracking platform that combines precision motion capture with two-way device communication, targeting applications ranging from virtual production and robotics to industrial automation and location-based virtual reality.

The launch marks the company’s latest effort to address growing demand for tracking systems capable of operating reliably in large, complex environments where accuracy, scalability and real-time device monitoring are critical.

At the centre of ActiveIO is a proprietary two-way radio frequency (RF) communication protocol that enables OptiTrack’s Motive software to communicate directly with every tracked device. Unlike conventional tracking systems, which primarily identify object positions, ActiveIO also transmits operational data such as battery status, firmware updates and device health while supporting external inputs through integrated general-purpose input/output (GPIO) ports.

The system also introduces a new method for identifying active markers. Each LED emits a unique binary light pattern, allowing individual markers to identify themselves in real time. This enables multiple identical objects to be tracked simultaneously without requiring unique marker layouts, reducing setup time and simplifying deployment in environments with large numbers of tracked assets.

According to OptiTrack, the technology overcomes limitations associated with passive reflective markers and earlier active tracking systems, where identical objects often required customised marker configurations for identification.

The company said ActiveIO combines its marker technology with inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor fusion, allowing six degrees of freedom (6DoF) tracking even when only a single marker remains visible. The approach is designed to improve rotational accuracy and maintain tracking performance in environments where markers may be temporarily obscured.

The platform also extends tracking distance through high-power active markers that remain visible beyond 30 metres. An IP67-rated BaseStation with dual RF antennas supports permanent outdoor installations, while GPIO interfaces allow external devices such as sensors, joysticks and control buttons to communicate directly with Motive software or third-party applications through the NatNet protocol.

Sidney Rittenberg, Chief Executive Officer of OptiTrack, said the platform was developed for applications where tracking reliability is essential.

“By allowing identical objects to self-identify in real time, we are enabling customers in virtual production, location-based VR and robotics to deploy faster, track further and operate with greater confidence,” he said.

The initial ActiveIO ecosystem includes several hardware components designed for different deployment requirements. The ActiveIO BaseStation manages communication between cameras and tracked devices while synchronising the overall tracking environment. The ActiveIO Puck is a standalone tracking device equipped with eight LEDs, a rechargeable battery and an integrated IMU for six-degree-of-freedom tracking.

Other products include the ActiveIO Tag-8, designed for tracking tools, props and custom devices, as well as the ActiveIO Wand and Square, which are intended for long-range calibration. The ecosystem also includes Wired CinePuck and AnchorPuck devices for high-precision tracking in large environments, alongside headset clips for virtual reality devices, including the HTC Vive Focus 3.

OptiTrack said ActiveIO has been developed for demanding applications including in-camera visual effects production, live broadcast, theatre, defence and tactical training, robotics, drone navigation, CAVE environments and industrial automation. The platform is also intended for location-based virtual reality experiences, where multiple users often interact with identical equipment simultaneously.

Anthony Lazzaro, Senior Director of Software at OptiTrack, said the combination of precision tracking and two-way communication differentiates the platform from existing active tracking systems.

He said ActiveIO not only delivers highly accurate motion tracking but also enables real-time device updates, status monitoring and external input integration, expanding the role of motion capture systems beyond positional tracking.
