LG Launches FDA-Cleared 40-Inch Diagnostic Monitor for Radiology Workflows

LG Electronics has expanded its medical-display portfolio with a 40-inch curved diagnostic monitor designed for radiology and other medical-imaging workflows, adding a larger, ultrawide format to its FDA-cleared healthcare display range.

The South Korean electronics maker said on August 12 that its 40HT513D had received U.S. Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance. The monitor is intended for diagnostic radiology rather than surgical applications and is positioned as a single-screen alternative to workstation setups that typically use three 3-megapixel displays.

The monitor uses a curved IPS Black panel with a 21:9 aspect ratio and a 5,120 × 2,160-pixel resolution, equivalent to about 11 megapixels. LG says the wider display area is designed to allow radiologists to view multiple images and patient information without the bezels and gaps created by separate monitors.

A central feature is LG’s 3PBP, or 3 Picture by Picture, function, which divides the screen into three independent sections. Radiologists can use the layout to compare current and previous X-ray, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging images while simultaneously viewing electronic medical records.

The monitor also incorporates a built-in KVM switch, allowing users to operate two connected computers through a single keyboard, mouse and display. LG says users can move between the systems by moving the cursor to the edge of the screen, while files can be transferred between connected computers through drag-and-drop functionality.

Calibration is another focus of the design. The 40HT513D includes a detachable calibration sensor that can be stored within the monitor when it is not required and extended when brightness and contrast measurements or calibration checks are performed. The removable design is also intended to simplify maintenance.

LG has not publicly disclosed the monitor’s typical or peak brightness or its native contrast ratio. Those specifications should be distinguished from the calibration functions built into the product. The company has reported the curved IPS Black panel and 5,120 × 2,160 resolution, but available information does not establish brightness or contrast figures for this model.

The monitor also includes Focus View, which highlights a selected area of an image while dimming the remainder of the display. A dedicated Pathology mode adjusts display settings for pathology images, with the aim of improving visibility of fine structures such as cells.

For hospitals operating multiple units, LG offers LG Calibration Studio Medical, a management platform designed to support remote quality-control testing. The software can store test results on a central server and alert administrators when a display requires attention, allowing facilities to manage calibration and maintenance across multiple installed monitors.

The company is targeting the monitor at hospitals and other healthcare facilities where radiologists need to review large volumes of medical imagery and supporting patient information. The single-screen configuration also reflects a broader effort by display manufacturers to reduce the physical and workflow limitations associated with multi-monitor diagnostic workstations.

LG said it plans to continue expanding its FDA-cleared diagnostic-monitor portfolio as it develops its business-to-business healthcare display business. Lee Chung-hwan, executive vice president and head of LG Electronics’ display business unit, said the company would continue working to strengthen its FDA-approved diagnostic display offerings.

A Korean radiology executive who tested the monitor for about seven weeks reportedly said its wide, bezel-free format made it easier to review several screens and that the curved design improved the viewing environment. The assessment was company-reported and does not constitute an independent clinical evaluation.
