The Dominican Republic has developed its first university-designed microchip, marking a step toward building domestic semiconductor research and engineering capabilities, according to Prensa Latina.
The chip was developed by professors, students and graduates of the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), who completed the design process from electronic architecture and simulation through manufacturing and validation. The digital design was ultimately converted into a physical circuit manufactured in silicon through an international industrial process.
Dominican President Luis Abinader endorsed a proposal to establish a semiconductor laboratory for shared use among higher education institutions during the event “STEM Transforms RD: Innovation to Build the Future.”
Abinader said projects such as the university microchip could strengthen research, innovation and specialist training while helping prepare the country to participate in the international semiconductor supply chain.
The initiative forms part of the Dominican government’s broader policy to promote the semiconductor industry and develop higher-value economic sectors. The government also aims to create better-paying jobs and increase the role of technology in the country’s economy.
University Chip Advances Semiconductor Training
PUCMM Rector Secilio Espinal said the microchip was designed and verified by members of the university before being manufactured in silicon through an international production process.
The university is already developing a second version of the chip with neural processing capabilities. The project is intended to explore the ability to execute artificial intelligence-related operations directly in hardware.
Carlos José Pantaleón, director of PUCMM’s School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, said the first device incorporates an arithmetic-logic unit, registers and control logic. These components enable the chip to perform calculations and process instructions.
The project also involved several international semiconductor technology companies. GlobalFoundries (Nasdaq: GFS) participated in manufacturing, while Synopsys (Nasdaq: SNPS) provided semiconductor design tools and training. Keysight Technologies (NYSE: KEYS) supported simulation, measurement and testing.
The collaboration gives students and researchers exposure to processes spanning chip architecture, electronic design automation, silicon manufacturing and device validation.
The proposed shared semiconductor laboratory could further extend that capability across Dominican universities by providing infrastructure for research and practical training.
