Kopin Corporation (NASDAQ: KOPN) has secured an additional $18.6 million U.S. government award to advance its color microLED microdisplay technology, expanding funding for displays designed for next-generation military equipment and strengthening its plans for domestic manufacturing.
The award was issued through the U.S. Army Contracting Command under the Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment (IBAS) program, administered through the Office of the Secretary of War. It marks the second major government investment in Kopin’s color microLED development, bringing the company’s total IBAS funding to $34 million.
The new funding will support the development of two additional microLED display configurations tailored to ground-soldier equipment and pilot applications. It will also help Kopin accelerate efforts to establish and expand U.S.-based manufacturing capabilities for the technology.
Funding Targets Soldier and Pilot Systems
The additional displays are intended for military visual systems with demanding requirements for brightness, durability, power efficiency and reliable operation in challenging environments.
Potential applications include soldier equipment, pilot head-up displays (HUDs), weapon sights, helmet-mounted systems and augmented-reality platforms. These systems rely on compact displays that can deliver clear visual information under varied operating conditions.
Kopin said the expanded development program will help address requirements across additional Army programs of record. The company did not disclose a project-by-project breakdown of the award or a timeline for completing the two configurations.
“Securing additional IBAS funding represents significant continued validation of Kopin’s MicroLED technology and its importance to next-generation U.S. defense systems,” said Michael Murray, Kopin’s CEO.
Murray said the combined $34 million in IBAS funding would support further development and U.S.-based manufacturing of displays for future soldier and pilot systems.
Domestic Manufacturing Remains a Priority
The award also supports efforts to bring more microLED manufacturing processes into the United States. Domestic production of advanced display components is a strategic consideration for defense programs that depend on specialized technologies and reliable supply chains.
By expanding its manufacturing capabilities, Kopin aims to support U.S. defense requirements while developing a production base that could serve additional applications.
MicroLED technology is being developed for applications requiring high brightness, low power consumption and compact display designs. In military systems, these characteristics can support visual interfaces used for navigation, targeting and situational awareness.
The technology could also extend beyond defense as manufacturers explore its use in other specialized display and optical systems.
Kopin Sees Opportunities Beyond Defense
Kopin develops application-specific optical systems, optical interconnect devices for data centers and high-performance microdisplays for defense, industrial, enterprise, medical and consumer markets.
The company said the government-funded work will also support foundational microLED platform technology relevant to its AI interconnect products, although the award is specifically directed toward developing additional displays for military applications.
The latest funding adds to Kopin’s efforts to expand its position across defense and other markets that require advanced optical and display components. Its ability to translate development programs into scalable manufacturing and follow-on commercial contracts will be important to realizing the broader opportunities associated with the technology.
