Agilent Technologies (NYSE: A) has launched the 5987A single quadrupole mass selective detector (MSD) with GC Assist and MassHunter 14 software, targeting improved analytical performance, reduced instrument downtime and greater efficiency in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) laboratories.

When paired with Agilent’s 8890B or 8860B gas chromatographs, the 5987A forms an integrated GC/MS system designed to improve data quality and simplify routine laboratory operations.

The detector delivers up to a 25% increase in scan rate while maintaining data quality. Supported by MassHunter 14 software, it introduces two operating modes: dynamic selected ion monitoring (dSIM) and simultaneous dSIM/Scan.

Faster Analysis and Automated Method Development

The dSIM mode increases dwell time to improve sensitivity and peak shape, while simultaneous dSIM/Scan captures low-level SIM data alongside full-scan results suitable for library searches in a single analysis.

MassHunter 14 also introduces Optimizer, a method development capability designed to automate the creation, updating and maintenance of SIM methods. The feature aims to simplify the management of expanding compound databases and reduce manual work during analytical method development.

Warren Potts, vice president and general manager of Agilent’s Gas Phase Division, said laboratories face increasing workloads and resource constraints while maintaining expectations for data quality. He said the 5987A combines analytical performance with system intelligence to help scientists identify potential issues earlier and simplify routine maintenance.

GC Assist Adds Monitoring and Maintenance Features

GC Assist provides system monitoring, troubleshooting and maintenance guidance across the GC/MS workflow. It can track and record more than 60 system parameters, alert users when maintenance is required and flag results that fall outside predefined quality control limits.

The software also provides step-by-step maintenance instructions and onboard videos to guide laboratory personnel through routine procedures. Remote instrument status monitoring and troubleshooting are available within a laboratory’s secure network.

The system additionally monitors performance indicators related to gas and power consumption, including potential carrier gas leaks. By identifying issues before they affect analytical results or quality control requirements, GC Assist is designed to reduce repeat analyses and associated resource consumption.

Lower Energy Consumption

Agilent said the 5987A consumes up to 40% less energy than its previous GC/MSD systems, supporting laboratories’ energy efficiency and sustainability objectives.
