Tata Electronics and ASML have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the development of semiconductor manufacturing capabilities in India.
The partnership will focus on Tata Electronics’ upcoming 300 mm semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat. The plant is expected to become India’s first commercial 300 mm semiconductor fab.
Under the agreement, ASML will provide advanced lithography tools and solutions for the Dholera facility. The collaboration is aimed at supporting the establishment and operational ramp-up of the fab.
Lithography systems are among the most critical technologies used in semiconductor manufacturing. They enable the transfer of circuit patterns onto silicon wafers during chip production. ASML is one of the world’s leading suppliers of semiconductor lithography equipment and works with major chip manufacturers globally.
The companies said the partnership will also include cooperation in supply chain development, talent creation, and research initiatives linked to India’s semiconductor ecosystem.
The announcement comes as India accelerates efforts to establish domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependence on imports. Governments and technology companies worldwide are increasingly focusing on semiconductor supply chain diversification amid rising global demand for chips across automotive, consumer electronics, artificial intelligence, industrial systems, and data infrastructure.
Dr. Randhir Thakur, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Electronics, said the partnership with ASML would support the company’s plans to build a resilient and trusted semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India.
He said ASML’s expertise in lithography technologies would help ensure manufacturing quality, operational efficiency, and the timely ramp-up of the Dholera facility. He also highlighted the importance of local innovation and workforce development for the long-term success of semiconductor manufacturing in India.
Christophe Fouquet, President and CEO of ASML, said India’s semiconductor sector is expanding rapidly and presents significant long-term opportunities.
He said ASML intends to work closely with Tata Electronics and the broader semiconductor ecosystem in India. He added that the company aims to contribute technological expertise while supporting talent development initiatives in the country.
Tata Electronics is developing the Dholera semiconductor facility with a planned investment of approximately US$11 billion. The fab is expected to manufacture semiconductors for sectors including automotive, mobile devices, artificial intelligence, computing, and industrial applications.
The company has also formed partnerships with global semiconductor ecosystem players, including Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) of Taiwan. Through the collaboration with PSMC, Tata Electronics has gained access to semiconductor process technologies ranging from 28nm to 110nm.
Construction work at the Dholera site is progressing, according to the company.
The ASML partnership is part of Tata Electronics’ broader strategy to develop collaborations across the semiconductor value chain. These partnerships cover equipment suppliers, process technologies, materials, and design ecosystems required for semiconductor manufacturing.
The agreement also reflects growing strategic cooperation between India and The Netherlands in critical technologies such as semiconductors.
Talent development remains another key focus area for the project. Semiconductor manufacturing requires a highly specialized workforce across engineering, fabrication, materials science, and equipment operations.
Tata Electronics said it has already partnered with several Indian and international institutions to develop semiconductor talent locally. Together, Tata Electronics and ASML will work on initiatives aimed at strengthening the domestic talent pipeline and ensuring the availability of skilled professionals for future semiconductor manufacturing operations.
