Advanced Energy Launches 1,100W Half-Brick PFC Module

Advanced Energy Industries has introduced a new 1,100W board-mounted power factor correction (PFC) module, expanding its portfolio of high-density power solutions for industrial, medical, defence and telecommunications applications.

The company said the AIH03ZPFC is the industry’s first 1,100W PFC module in a standard half-brick form factor, addressing growing demand for compact, high-efficiency power conversion in space-constrained systems.

Power factor correction modules are widely used to improve energy efficiency, reduce power losses and ensure compliance with power quality standards. As computing, networking and industrial equipment become more compact, manufacturers are increasingly seeking higher power density without increasing system size.

According to Advanced Energy, the new module delivers a regulated, non-isolated 390V DC output with peak efficiency of 97.3%, representing a 2.3 percentage-point improvement over its previous-generation PFC modules. Power density has increased by 44% to 380W per cubic inch, enabling more power within the same footprint.

The company said the module also reduces power losses by 46% compared with earlier designs, contributing to lower heat generation and improved system efficiency.

Unlike conventional half-brick PFC modules, the AIH03ZPFC integrates features including internal inrush current limiting, digital PMBus control and monitoring, and auxiliary power support for external housekeeping functions. The integration is intended to reduce component count while enabling more compact power supply designs.

David Richmond, Senior Vice President of High Volume Products at Advanced Energy, said the module combines higher output power with integrated functionality to improve efficiency and simplify power system design.

The module supports a unity power factor across an input voltage range of 85V to 264V AC and does not require power derating at lower input voltages, allowing designers to maximise available output across varying operating conditions.

It is compatible with standard heatsinks and thermal management solutions and can operate either as a standalone PFC stage or alongside downstream DC-DC converters in larger power architectures.

Advanced Energy said the module uses baseplate contact cooling and supports operating temperatures from -20°C to +100°C, with startup capability down to -40°C. It is housed in a standard 61 mm × 58.4 mm half-brick package with an installed height of 13.3 mm, allowing it to fit existing high-density power system designs.
