Mitsubishi Electric, Sony Partner on AI Vision Sensors

Mitsubishi Electric and Sony Semiconductor Solutions will establish a joint venture to develop AI-powered vision sensors for manufacturing, as the Japanese companies seek to accelerate factory automation and address growing labour shortages across industrial sectors.

The new company, Advanced Vision Solutions Co., Ltd., is expected to begin operations in October 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. It will combine Sony’s image sensor and edge AI technologies with Mitsubishi Electric’s factory automation (FA) systems to develop vision solutions that analyse images directly on sensors and feed actionable data into production equipment.

The move comes as manufacturers increasingly adopt AI and edge computing to improve productivity, reduce downtime and automate production processes. Vision systems have become a critical part of modern factories, enabling machines to inspect products, monitor equipment and respond to changing operating conditions in real time.

Unlike conventional machine vision systems that primarily capture images for later analysis, the joint venture’s technology is designed to process visual information at the point of capture. The companies said the system will identify production changes, equipment conditions and quality issues, then relay only relevant information to factory control systems. That allows production equipment to respond automatically with limited human intervention.

The companies aim to automate processes that have traditionally depended on manual inspection or operator experience. The technology is also expected to support predictive maintenance by detecting early signs of equipment wear before failures occur.

The partnership combines two complementary businesses. Sony is a global leader in CMOS image sensors and has expanded its portfolio into edge AI, enabling data processing directly within sensing devices. Mitsubishi Electric brings decades of experience in programmable controllers, industrial drives, robotics and factory automation systems used across manufacturing industries.

The companies also plan to integrate vision data with other operational information collected across production lines. Combining multiple data sources is expected to provide a more complete view of factory operations, helping manufacturers identify process deviations, equipment abnormalities and production bottlenecks that may be difficult to detect through a single sensor.

The collaboration is part of a broader shift towards physical AI in industrial automation, where AI systems are embedded into machinery and industrial equipment rather than relying solely on cloud-based computing. The companies said the platform is intended to simplify deployment by reducing the need for specialist knowledge in optics or artificial intelligence.

Manufacturers worldwide are accelerating investment in intelligent automation as labour shortages, rising production costs and pressure to improve quality reshape factory operations. Industrial vision systems are evolving from inspection tools into decision-making platforms capable of supporting autonomous production.

Takayuki Tsuzuki, Executive Officer (Associate) and Group President of Factory Automation Systems at Mitsubishi Electric, said demand for autonomous manufacturing continues to grow as companies seek to improve productivity with fewer workers.

He said the company plans to position AI vision sensors as a core element of its factory automation business by integrating them with Serendie, Mitsubishi Electric’s digital platform, enabling more advanced control of manufacturing systems.

Sony Semiconductor Solutions President and Chief Executive Officer Shinji Sashida said image sensors are becoming increasingly important as AI moves closer to production equipment.

He said sensors now act as the “eyes” of industrial AI systems, enabling machines to understand factory conditions and translate visual information into operational decisions.

The agreement reflects a wider trend in industrial technology, with semiconductor companies and automation suppliers working more closely to bring computing intelligence to the factory floor. As manufacturers seek faster decisions and greater operational flexibility, edge AI and intelligent sensing are expected to play a growing role in next-generation production systems.

For Mitsubishi Electric, the venture strengthens its digital manufacturing portfolio by adding AI-enabled sensing to its automation platform. For Sony, it expands the industrial applications of its image sensing technologies beyond traditional markets.

The joint venture is expected to begin developing solutions for manufacturers after its planned launch in October next year, positioning both companies to capitalise on growing demand for smarter, more autonomous factories.
