Microchip Acquires Hailo to Strengthen Edge AI Portfolio

Microchip Technology Incorporated (Nasdaq: MCHP) has signed a definitive agreement to acquire edge AI chipmaker Hailo, expanding its portfolio of intelligent edge computing solutions as demand grows for power-efficient artificial intelligence processing in embedded systems.

The companies said the transaction, which remains subject to customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions, is expected to close by the end of Microchip’s current fiscal quarter ending Sept. 30. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, and Microchip said the acquisition is not expected to have a material impact on its financial results.

The acquisition will strengthen Microchip’s capabilities in accelerated edge AI by adding Hailo’s portfolio of AI processors, vision system-on-chip (SoC) devices and AI software tools. The combined offering is expected to target applications including robotics, drones, industrial automation, smart cameras and other intelligent edge systems.

The move comes as semiconductor companies continue expanding their AI portfolios beyond cloud data centres to meet growing demand for low-latency, energy-efficient AI processing at the network edge.

Hailo has developed a range of edge AI processors designed to accelerate computer vision and generative AI workloads while operating within tight power constraints. Its product portfolio includes the Hailo-8, Hailo-10 and Hailo-15 processors, supporting applications ranging from compact smart cameras to high-performance edge servers running multimodal AI and local generative AI models.

With the acquisition, Microchip will add capabilities including advanced image signal processing (ISP), digital signal processing (DSP), H.264 and H.265 video encoding, AI video stream processing and support for convolutional neural networks (CNNs), transformer architectures and large language and vision-language models.

The transaction also expands Microchip’s customer and developer ecosystem. Hailo brings more than 100 active customers and a developer community exceeding 10,000 users, along with an established software platform supporting AI deployment across multiple edge computing applications.

According to Microchip, Hailo’s ecosystem—including its Raspberry Pi integration, gated Developer Zone, GitHub activity and community forums—has created a developer-driven demand generation model that helps convert software developers into commercial customers.

“The acquisition of Hailo accelerates Microchip’s expansion into high-performance edge AI processing,” said Mark Reiten, Senior Corporate Vice President at Microchip.

He said Hailo’s AI acceleration technology, vision processing capabilities and software ecosystem complement Microchip’s existing embedded processing, FPGA, connectivity, security, power management and analogue semiconductor portfolio.

“Together, we can help customers build more capable intelligent edge systems with the right balance of performance, power efficiency, reliability and system cost,” Reiten said.

Hailo Chief Executive Officer Orr Danon said the acquisition would provide the company with access to Microchip’s global customer base and embedded systems expertise.

“Microchip’s customer reach, channel scale and broad technology portfolio would create a strong platform for bringing advanced vision processing and AI acceleration to a broader range of intelligent edge applications,” Danon said.

The acquisition builds on Microchip’s broader strategy of expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities across embedded computing platforms.

The company previously acquired Neuronix AI Labs, adding neural network optimisation technology designed to improve AI and machine learning performance on field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and system-on-chip devices.

By adding Hailo’s dedicated AI accelerators and vision processors, Microchip broadens its product portfolio beyond embedded controllers and connectivity solutions to address a wider range of AI inference workloads at the edge.

Industry demand for edge AI hardware has accelerated as manufacturers seek to process AI workloads closer to where data is generated rather than relying solely on cloud infrastructure. Applications such as industrial automation, autonomous robots, surveillance systems and smart imaging increasingly require real-time decision-making with low latency, high reliability and reduced power consumption.

The acquisition positions Microchip to compete more directly in the rapidly expanding edge AI semiconductor market, where vendors are integrating dedicated AI accelerators with embedded processors to support increasingly sophisticated computer vision and generative AI applications.

Once completed, the transaction is expected to enhance Microchip’s ability to deliver integrated hardware and software platforms for developers building next-generation intelligent edge devices across industrial, automotive, consumer and commercial markets.
