Wolfspeed Takes Navitas to Court Over Patent Dispute

Wolfspeed has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Navitas Semiconductor in a U.S. federal court, alleging that a range of Navitas’ power semiconductor products infringe several of its patents.

The complaint, filed in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware, asserts infringement of five U.S. patents covering technologies related to wide bandgap semiconductors, including silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) devices.

According to Wolfspeed, the products named in the lawsuit include Navitas’ GaN-based field-effect transistor (FET) families marketed under the GaNFast, GaNSlim and GaNSafe brands, as well as the company’s GeneSiC MOSFETs and SiCPAK power modules.

The legal action comes as competition intensifies in the market for wide bandgap semiconductors, which are increasingly used in electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, industrial equipment and AI data centre power infrastructure due to their higher efficiency and power density compared with conventional silicon-based devices.

Wolfspeed said its intellectual property portfolio is built on decades of research and development in silicon carbide materials, gallium nitride transistors and SiC-based power devices.

“Wolfspeed’s foundational technology helped create this industry, and we are deeply committed to defending the intellectual property that represents decades of innovation and R&D investment,” Chief Executive Officer Robert Feurle said in a statement.

The company said protecting its patent portfolio remains a strategic priority and that the lawsuit is intended to safeguard continued investment in next-generation SiC and GaN technologies.

Navitas had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of the announcement. The lawsuit seeks judicial relief over the alleged patent infringement, although Wolfspeed did not disclose the damages or remedies being sought.
