SK hynix ADR Enters Key U.S. Semiconductor Index at 4.8% Weight

SK hynix’s Nasdaq-listed ADR has entered the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index, bringing the HBM-focused memory maker into VanEck’s roughly $70 billion semiconductor ETF only two months after its U.S. debut.

SK hynix’s American depositary receipt has been added to the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index, expanding the South Korean memory-chip maker’s presence in U.S. passive investment products.

The ADR, which trades on Nasdaq under the ticker SKHY, received an approximate 4.8% weighting following the index’s September rebalancing, according to Seoul Economic Daily. The same index is tracked by the VanEck Semiconductor ETF, commonly known as SMH.

The inclusion comes about two months after SK hynix began trading in the United States. The company’s ADR started trading on Nasdaq on July 10, opening at $170 against an initial price of $149. Nasdaq said the listing represented the second-largest U.S. share sale at the time.

Index Addition Opens a New Passive Investment Channel

The inclusion gives SK hynix exposure to a wider pool of U.S. investors through semiconductor-focused index funds. Because SMH tracks the MVIS US Listed Semiconductor 25 Index, changes to the benchmark can result in corresponding portfolio adjustments by the ETF.

SMH had approximately $70 billion in net assets, according to Seoul Economic Daily, making it the largest semiconductor-focused ETF listed in the United States. Its holdings include major semiconductor companies such as Nvidia, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Broadcom, ASML and Micron.

The 4.8% weighting therefore places SK hynix alongside some of the world’s largest companies across chip design, manufacturing, foundry services and semiconductor equipment.

The move also extends the significance of SK hynix’s Nasdaq listing beyond direct access to U.S. investors. Its inclusion in an index tracked by a major semiconductor ETF can bring additional trading activity as funds adjust their holdings to reflect the benchmark.

HBM Adds AI Hardware Exposure

SK hynix’s addition also increases the index’s exposure to high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a critical component in AI computing systems.

HBM is designed to move large volumes of data between memory and processors at high speeds. It is increasingly used alongside advanced AI accelerators deployed in data centers, making memory capacity and supply an important part of the broader AI infrastructure buildout.

SK hynix has become a major supplier in this market. The company reported that it held more than 60% of the HBM market as of the second quarter of 2025, while Counterpoint Research cited by SK hynix put its share of HBM shipments at 62% during the same period. Those figures relate to different measures and periods and should not be interpreted as a current 2026 market-share estimate.

The company said in its second-quarter 2026 results that it had begun mass shipments of HBM4 during the quarter and planned to increase production in the second half of the year.

KODEX ETF Also Adds SK hynix

The index change is also being reflected outside the United States. Samsung Asset Management’s KODEX U.S. Semiconductor ETF added SK hynix ADRs following the September rebalancing.

The fund tracks the same semiconductor index, giving investors in South Korea exposure to a portfolio of U.S.-listed semiconductor companies. Seoul Economic Daily reported that SK hynix was added with an approximately 4.8% weighting.

For SK hynix, the development comes shortly after its Nasdaq debut and puts its U.S.-listed security within a major passive investment ecosystem. It also gives investors tracking semiconductor indexes direct exposure to one of the industry’s largest HBM suppliers as demand for AI computing infrastructure continues to reshape the memory market.
