Huawei has launched its latest tri-fold smartphone, the HUAWEI Mate XT 2 | ULTIMATE DESIGN, introducing a new processor, upgraded durability architecture, hardware-level privacy technology and enhanced large-screen capabilities as the company pushes further into the premium foldable smartphone market.
Unveiled on September 7, the Mate XT 2 is the first smartphone to feature Huawei’s LogicFolding Tau (τ) Chip, marking the technology’s entry into mass commercialisation. It is also the first device powered by the company’s new Kirin 9050 Pro chipset.

The Mate XT 2 retains Huawei’s distinctive tri-fold format, opening from both sides to create a large-screen experience. The company has redesigned the exterior around what it calls a wing-like aesthetic, drawing on Chinese design elements.
The rear panel features a cloud pattern created using Brocade Cloud craftsmanship. The phone is offered in Purple, White and Black, while the camera ring uses Huawei’s Star Diamond Glow design. Made with Yttrium Crystal and fired at 1,800°C, the ring undergoes eight polishing stages to create 33 diamond-like facets.
Focus on Foldable Durability
Huawei has also reworked the phone’s structural design with its Xuanwu Ultra-Durable Tri-Fold Architecture.
The company said the Mate XT 2 is the first tri-fold smartphone to support IP58 and IP59 dust and water resistance. The cover screen uses Xuanwu Kunlun Glass, while anti-glare technology is intended to improve visibility in bright outdoor conditions.
The main display incorporates a multi-layer structure combining a large ultra-thin glass layer, aerospace-grade ultra-thin high-strength steel and carbon-fibre support. Huawei said the design is intended to improve resistance to impacts and stresses associated with repeated folding.
The Advanced Precision Hinge System 2.0 uses five curved arms and a synchronised linkage mechanism to distribute force across the hinge.
Kirin 9050 Pro Drives Performance
The new Kirin 9050 Pro is at the centre of Huawei’s performance upgrade. The company claims the Mate XT 2 delivers a 42% improvement in overall performance compared with the previous generation through closer integration between hardware, software, chips and cloud services.
The chipset combines a LinxiCore CPU with Huawei’s Ark Engine. Its Maleoon GPU has twice the computing units and cache of the previous generation and supports hardware-level real-time ray tracing at 50 MRPS, according to Huawei.
AI processing is handled by the Da Vinci Architecture NPU. Huawei said the smartphone natively supports the Pangu 30B-A2B mixture-of-experts large language model, allowing certain AI functions to run directly on the device.
One example is AI-powered album management through Celia, Huawei’s digital assistant.
The company has also redesigned thermal management around the tri-fold form factor. Heat sources are distributed across the three frames, while large vapour chambers and thermally conductive graphene are used to transfer heat across the device.
Satellite Connectivity and Security
Connectivity is supported by multiple communication systems and 32 distributed antennas, which Huawei said enable faster 5A connectivity.
The device also supports Tiantong satellite communication and Beidou satellite messaging, extending connectivity options beyond conventional cellular networks.
Huawei has incorporated a Mobile Security Processor alongside an independent security chip. The system supports post-quantum cryptography algorithm detection and has received EAL5+ CCRC security certification, according to the company.
Hardware-Level Privacy
The Mate XT 2 introduces the Smart Shield Privacy Screen, which Huawei describes as the industry’s first hardware-level privacy technology designed specifically for a foldable device.
The system uses an independent dual-pixel design that is intended to preserve screen resolution when privacy mode is activated. Intelligent sensing can also identify situations such as entering airports or railway stations and issue privacy reminders.
Users can activate the feature by double-tapping the cover screen or using the Smart Controls button.
The phone also includes ECG analysis software and has obtained an NMPA Class II Medical Device Registration Certificate. Users can initiate an ECG measurement while holding the unfolded phone with both hands, with Celia subsequently assisting with analysis of the results.
Camera System Targets More Accurate Colours
Huawei has upgraded the imaging system with True-to-Color Camera 3.0, which the company said improves colour reproduction by 95% compared with the previous generation by filtering infrared interference.
The camera system includes an ultra-HDR main camera, an ultra-wide-aperture periscope telephoto camera and an ultra-wide-angle camera. Video recording supports a dynamic range of up to 18 EV.
Huawei’s XMAGE SmartCapture technology can recognise subjects and scenes, including people, scenery and food, and provide real-time composition and lighting recommendations through AI-generated previews.
The tri-fold design also enables a Desk-calendar shooting mode for selfies and group photography.
HarmonyOS 7 Brings Multitasking to the Large Screen
The smartphone runs on HarmonyOS 7, with Huawei placing emphasis on applications designed for its expanded display.
Its Live-Multitask feature allows three windows to be displayed simultaneously, with users able to adjust window sizes and control audio independently. Huawei said the experience has been adapted for scenarios including financial management, social entertainment, office work, shopping comparisons and travel planning.
The company is also working with application developers to expand software support for tri-fold displays, an important factor in making large-screen foldables more practical for everyday use.
The HUAWEI Mate XT 2 | ULTIMATE DESIGN starts at RMB 19,999 and will be available with a stylus set. Official sales are scheduled to begin at 10:08 a.m. on September 12.
