BlackSky Technology Inc. (NYSE: BKSY) has collected and processed first-light imagery from its fifth Gen-3 satellite less than 20 hours after launch, adding new high-resolution capacity to its growing Earth-observation constellation.
The rapid commissioning marks another step in BlackSky’s deployment of its Gen-3 satellite architecture, which provides imagery at a resolution of 35 centimeters. The company said the latest satellite follows a consistent launch-to-imagery timeline designed to shorten the gap between deployment and customer access to operational data.
The new capacity comes as demand for high-resolution, time-sensitive satellite imagery grows among defense and intelligence organizations operating in rapidly changing environments. BlackSky said additional capacity can reduce the need to prioritize which missions receive imagery when satellite resources are constrained.
“The Gen-3 constellation continues to deliver exceptional performance, and each new satellite we rapidly bring online shortens the time between an event on the ground and delivery of actionable intelligence necessary to effectively respond,” said Brian O’Toole, CEO of BlackSky.
BlackSky said each Gen-3 satellite costs about one-fifth as much as its legacy platforms while providing significantly greater capacity. The company expects the lower platform cost and increased number of satellites to expand the availability of time-diverse imagery and analytics.
The Gen-3 system combines high-resolution imagery with BlackSky’s AI-enabled analytics platform. The technology can automatically identify and monitor an expanding range of vehicles, aircraft and vessels, giving customers additional data for assessing changing conditions.
The company is positioning the combination of rapid satellite commissioning, higher capacity and automated analytics as a way to accelerate decision-making for customers, particularly in defense and intelligence applications where operational conditions can change within minutes or hours.
BlackSky plans to continue deploying Gen-3 satellites, with additional spacecraft expected to be in orbit by the end of 2026. The company operates a dual-constellation architecture in which its newer Gen-3 satellites work alongside Gen-2 spacecraft.
While Gen-3 is being expanded, BlackSky said Gen-2 remains an important part of its real-time space-based intelligence capabilities, supporting monitoring of events on Earth and objects in orbit.
The company operates a vertically integrated model spanning satellite manufacturing and AI-driven software. Customers can access its data and intelligence capabilities through On-Demand and Assured subscription services, while sovereign customers can deploy full systems tailored to their requirements.
