Rapidus Corporation has completed an additional funding round of ¥150 billion (approximately $943 million) from Japan’s Information-Technology Promotion Agency (IPA), strengthening the company’s financial position as it works toward commercial production of 2nm logic semiconductors by 2027.

The latest investment follows an earlier ¥100 billion contribution from the IPA announced this year and forms part of Japan’s broader effort to bolster domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. The IPA operates as an independent administrative agency under the jurisdiction of Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).

With the new capital injection, Rapidus’ total funding has reached ¥424.95 billion. Earlier financing included ¥167.6 billion in private-sector investments from 32 companies, among them Canon Inc., Fujitsu Limited, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, SoftBank Group Corp., and Sony Group Corporation. Following the latest funding round, the company said its stated capital and legal capital surplus now stand at ¥424.95 billion.

Rapidus is positioning itself as a key player in Japan’s semiconductor revival strategy, focusing on the development and manufacture of next-generation logic chips. Since fiscal year 2022, the company has received support through projects funded by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) under the country’s Post-5G Information and Communication Systems Infrastructure Enhancement R&D initiative.

The supported programs include research into 2nm-generation semiconductor integration technology, short turnaround-time manufacturing processes, and advanced chiplet packaging technologies developed through Japan-U.S. collaboration.

The company said it will continue pursuing a combination of public and private funding as it transitions from research and development to full-scale manufacturing. Rapidus aims to begin mass production of advanced 2nm logic semiconductors by 2027, a milestone viewed as critical to strengthening Japan’s competitiveness in the global semiconductor industry amid growing demand for cutting-edge chips used in artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and next-generation communications systems.
