Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (TOKYO: 6981) has introduced the GCJ21BD72A225KE02, a new soft-termination multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) designed for automotive powertrain, safety, and advanced electronic systems.

The company said the component is the world’s first soft-termination chip MLCC to achieve 2.2μF capacitance at 100Vdc in the compact 0805-inch (2.0 x 1.25 mm) package size. The launch comes as automakers continue to increase the use of electronics in electric vehicles, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and autonomous driving platforms.

As vehicle electrification accelerates and 48V power systems become more common, manufacturers are seeking components that offer high capacitance, high voltage tolerance, and a small footprint. Automotive environments also require components capable of withstanding mechanical stress caused by vibration, thermal cycling, and board flexure.

Murata said the new MLCC addresses these challenges through its proprietary ceramic material technology, which enables higher capacitance in a smaller package while maintaining reliability.

The GCJ21BD72A225KE02 delivers performance that previously required a larger 1206-inch package. According to the company, the new design reduces board mounting area by approximately 51% compared with its previous 2.2μF/100Vdc MLCC. It also provides around 2.2 times greater capacitance than Murata’s earlier 0805-inch, 100Vdc product.

The capacitor incorporates soft-termination technology, which helps absorb stress from board flexure and reduces the likelihood of cracking after mounting. This feature is intended to enhance reliability in demanding automotive applications.

The component supports an operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C and meets X7T temperature characteristics under EIA standards.
